Eco-Innovations in Colorado

Sponsored by:

For Colorado companies, eco-responsibility is no longer an option: The need for energy and resources is ever-expanding and can no longer be supported with current technologies.  We must find better ways to produce energy, and use the energy we produce more efficiently.

In this session you will learn about the State of Colorado's ideas on both creating and conserving energy, and how Colorado's leadership in research and development of alternative energy technologies position the state and its businesses to leverage opportunities presented through the Federal economic stimulus package.

A panel of experts--including Dr. Carl Koval, Faculty Director of the CU Energy Initiative, Robert Noun,  Deputy Associate Director of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and Dean Nelson, Sun Microsystems' Director of Global Lab and Datacenter Design Services--will discuss how recent advances in wind, solar, and datacenter technology will reduce the corporate "footprint."  In particular, Sun  will showcase how it is applying new technologies to make its datacenters smaller and more energy-efficient, so that they will emit less carbon and cost less - without compromising compute capacity or security. Join us for a thought-provoking discussion of Eco Innovations in Colorado.

Speakers:

Dean Nelson, Senior Director, Global Lab & Datacenter Design Services (GDS), Sun Microsystems Inc.
Dean is responsible for managing Sun's multi-billion dollar global technical infrastructure portfolio including datacenter design, standards and strategy. The GDS work was showcased at Sun's Eco Launch in August, 2007, and the Colorado Data Center grand opening in January, 2009. Because of overwhelming customer interest, the GDS processes and design became a Sun service offering through the Data Center Efficiency practice (DCE) in December, 2007.

Dean has been in the technology industry for 19 years, of which 16 have been with Sun. Since taking over GDS, Dean has led the execution of the largest technical infrastructure consolidation in Sun's history--compressing the 1.4 million square foot portfolio by 48%, a $250M dollar investment.

Dean is the Founder of Data Center Pulse - an exclusive datacenter owner community influencing the industry through the lens of the end user. He is an author of the Sun Blueprint, "Energy Efficient Datacenters: The Role of Modularity in Datacenter Design" and was featured in Contrarian Minds, a focus on the engineers, scientists and dreamers of Sun Microsystems. Dean is also the recipient of Sun's prestigious Innovation Award presented by Sun's CEO, Jonathan Schwartz and CTO, Greg Papadopoulos in July, 2008.

Dr. Carl A, Koval, Faculty Director, Colorado University Energy Intitiative.
Carl has been a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (CHEM) at CU-Boulder since 1980. His research has resulted in over one hundred and ten peer-reviewed publications and ten patents, and has been supported by forty-seven separate research contracts and grants. He has collaborated closely with faculty in the Dept. of Chemical and Biological Engineering and with scientists at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

Most of Prof. Koval's research throughout his scientific career has been related to renewable or sustainable energy. Beginning in 2006, he has played several key roles in the development of the Colorado Renewable Energy Collaboratory, including serving as Institutional Coordinator for the Boulder Campus and on the Project Management Team for the Center for Revolutionary Solar Photoconversion (CRSP). In 2006, he was chosen to be the first Faculty Director of the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Initiative at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Robert Noun, Executive Director, Communications and External Affairs, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, (NREL)
Robert Noun directs the media relations, community outreach and congressional liaison activities for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).  Mr. Noun has been involved with renewable energy for over 30 years. During his career he has made significant contributions to the advancement of renewable energy technologies in both research management and communications. He is a past director of the NREL Wind Energy Research Program. Many of the technical improvements that appear in today’s wind turbine technology were developed during his leadership of the program.

Noun has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2002 Pioneer Award for contributions to the development of renewable energy from the World Renewable Energy Network in London. He has been a Guest Lecturer at the University of Denver College of Law. Before joining NREL in 1979, Noun served as legislative director for U.S. Representative Thomas Harkin of Iowa and was Representative Harkin’s counsel for science and technology policy. Noun received his bachelor degree from the University of Iowa and his law degree from the University of Kansas School of Law.
