• Congressional App Challenge Promotes STEM Learning

Colorado Technology Association recently participated in the judging of the Congressional App Challenge for Colorado's 7th Congressional District at Northglenn High School. This challenge was coordinated by Congressman Ed Perlmutter’s office with student participants from Northglenn High School and Arvada High School.

The Congressional App Challenge is a competition aimed at encouraging U.S. high school students to learn how to code by creating their own applications. The Challenge is intended to highlight the value of computer science and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education and encourage students to engage in these fields. By encouraging and recognizing our nation’s young programming talent, Congress hopes to shine a light on the growing importance of these skills.

Challenge participants are invited, either as individuals or as teams of up to four, to create and submit their own software application for mobile, tablet, or other computing devices on a platform of their choice. A panel of local computer science professionals and congressional representatives judge the apps, and the winners in each district will have the honor of being recognized by their Congressional representative.

Seven student teams participated in the challenge in Colorado's 7th Congressional District, each creating their own app. The ideas behind each app were innovative and useful and varied in function. Two teams won awards with team Northglenn VR from Northglenn High School taking the grand prize and team Arvada High School Locker Finder 2016 from Arvada High School taking the Rookie of the Year Award.

Northglenn VR’s app was built to allow the residents of Northglenn to experience their city in a new way, and learn more about the area in which they live. The app makes use of the Google Cardboard platform.

Arvada High School Locker Finder 2016’s app assists new students at Arvada High School find their lockers.

Colorado Technology Association was honored to participate in the Congressional App Challenge and thanks Congressman Ed Perlmutter and his staff for participating in and planning this event, and CTA encourages all of Colorado’s Congressional Districts to participate in next year’s Congressional App Challenge.
