• Microsoft Hosts STEM Career Day in partnership with Colorado Technology Foundation and Denver Public Schools CareerConnect

    Last week, Microsoft hosted their very first and highly successful CareerX job-shadowing event, a work-based learning program presented in partnership with Denver Public Schools’ (DPS) CareerConnect program and Colorado Technology Foundation (CTF) that exposes participating high school students to tech careers and in-demand skills to meet the needs of Colorado’s future technology workforce.

    “Opportunities like this one hosted by Microsoft spark interest in tech careers for a diverse group of students,” said CTF executive director Kelly Underell. “Microsoft’s contribution to this program sets a strong example for other enterprise companies in Colorado to drive cultural and technological advancement and elevate our state’s technology talent pipeline.” 

    Throughout the day, students learned about Microsoft’s HoloLens and mixed reality technology, back-end coding for the HoloLens, and business startup basics. Over lunch, four Microsoft employees shared their stories of how they got into tech careers and answered questions from the students about their journey with Microsoft from past roles to current.

    “Microsoft was excited to host the career exploration day in support of Colorado Technology Foundation’s outreach to the Denver Public Schools system,” said Chris Giblin, Denver CityNext Chair and Director, Enterprise Sales for Microsoft Colorado. “We hope that this career day for the students is the first of many opportunities to inspire their passion for technology and understanding of the wide range technology careers available to them. 

    Colorado Technology Foundation, the philanthropic branch of Colorado Technology Association (CTA), recently received a grant from Microsoft to support the Foundation’s partnership with DPS CareerConnect. The additional funding allows CTF to engage local tech companies to provide these work-based learning programs for Denver students interested in careers across the STEM spectrum.

    The portfolio of work-based learning opportunities available to students through CTF’s partnership with DPS CareerConnect and Microsoft include internships, job shadowing events, mentorships, project collaborations and apprenticeships. CTF works primarily with CTA member companies — regardless of size, capacity or industry — to ensure the successful delivery of the available programs. 

    To date, CTA has worked with DPS CareerConnect to engage more than 100 Colorado tech companies to bring work-based learning opportunities to nearly 1,000 high school students from across the district.
